Direct Services Stories

The Southeast Asian Coalition offers a plethora of direct services including health care outreach and health promotion activities, civic education and engagement activities, translation services, and community based cultural programming. Below are the stories of two women who have obtained U.S. citizenship, and more, with the help of SEAC's direct servicing programs.

Li-yan Liu

In 2007, Liyan Liu came to SEAC seeking assistance because she was determined to attain her U.S. citizenship. She was close to 70 years old and did not allow language and transportation barriers stand in her way. She has been part of our ESL class since its inception in 2007. Read more.

She traveled from Holden through multiple bus transfers to make it to her nightly E.S.L class. It all paid off when she received her citizenship on July 27, 2011. Soon afterwards, she came to the center to express her excitement. Ms. Liu was more than ecstatic and kept stating that we are a great family to her. She is a primary example of someone who overcame obstacles to pursue her dream of obtaining U.S. citizenship at the age 74. We are so proud of her and envy her for her perseverance.Hide this content.

Tuyet Do

Tuyet Do walked into our doors five years ago for direct servicing. Recently she's achieved one of her biggest milestones, obtaining her U.S. citizenship through the Naturalization process. Our staff assisted her with instructions for filling out the N-400 application for citizenship and made sure her application packet was complete with all the necessary documents.Read more.

On September 14, 2010 Ms. Do finally took the Oath of Naturalization. We have seen her blossom from being a very shy individual to now becoming a proud American citizen. Our relationship with Ms. Do didn't end when she obtained her citizenship – this past August we helped her find employment through our referral process.
